Blue is a genetic dilution of black, it's is really a fault and was counted as such until recently. He's not a crossbreed.

blue really isn't new either, another color that was culled back in the day but not so much anymore, but a majority of so called "blue pit's" are not pit bull's.they started out as pit bull/am staff mixes then they added mastiff and english bulldog into the mix

I had to do a study on this in leaving cert bio, blue is a sort of "mutation" It the geno code is dominant then the regressive gene is blocked out but as far as i can remember if there is two different colours of black like a different shade and both have a dominant genotype then there is a sort of mixture, personally i would love jr as a pitbull and would luv to have a pit that colour i think he is a perfect example of a pit but thats my opinion, there bully breeds however are not american pit bull terriers neither do they claim to be there just classed as a pitbull type dog such as am staffs and staff pit mixes. the dog warden here in limerick (who cant tell the diff between a staff and pitbull) even classes a dogo argentino as a pitbull.

Also with the co. council ban on dogs should also have wardens who can actually tell the difference between an apbt and pitbull type dogs if there enforceing that law

You can get thesame colour in greyhounds.two blacks can have blue pups if they are both carrying it.Two blues can only have blues.A black and a blue can have all blacks or blues and blacks. You can get blue brindles and blue fawns(buckskins) as well.Id say the merle colouration was always there but the pups were probably given swimming lessons.Plenty of pitbulls have 1 blue eye ,and all merle(sheepdogs) have blue eyes.maybe smithfield collie was bred to bulldogs back inthe bull-baiting days to give them cattle sense(I dont know this -just a theory). If you breed two merles together ,all the pups will come out deaf or blind and deaf.Thats why merle is a bad color.By the way slattery9104 ,are you any relation of joe or anthony?

i have to agree, it was never a colour that existed before and if its new then another breed would of had to be bred into the strain, i suppose that would make it not pure.

I would say it was probably bred into the breed by Hog Hunters in the US, they have those Black-mouthed curs etc. for sniffing and following the Hog, and the Pit for catching him, so it was possibly a cross made on purpose to make a breed that could do both parts.

Or an accidental breeding and the papers were hung.....
