the amstaff (american staffordshire) had nothing to do with the initial breed beginnings of the pit bull terrier as it is actually derived from the APBT.

the 'pit terrier' is most likely reffering to the old bull and terrier, an early pit dog similiar to the older type staffies, essentially a terrier/bulldog X

Easier way to explain it, what you read was wrong.

'American Pit Bull Terriers' are essentially descended from Bulldogs who fought, you guessed it, Bulls in the UK/Ireland. That was banned in the mid-1800's, at which point dog fighting became more popular as it was easier to hide.

Anyways, then people started moving to America and some brought their fighting-dogs, these dogs became popular in the states and all through the 1900's dog fighting was common-place, it was even sanctioned by the United Kennel Club and supervised by police at times!

Unfortunately for the APBT, dog fighting was banned in the US in the 70's, causing the majority of good people to leave the sport, leaving the remaining participants to be called 'criminals' as they were then committing a 'crime' by participating in the sport with their dogs.

You should try get your hands on the Colby book to learn about the history and alot of the first pedigrees to be kept on the breed, allot of today's dogs can still be traced back to the Colby dog's from the 1800's. It's well worth a read.

There was a time when keeping slaves was legal, this didn't make it right.

I'll leave it there for today so, Barry lol!

I'll email you a good book if you want to read it, Barry? Written by a man with a BA in Ethics and Philosphy from UCLA. Talks about the definition of cruelty among other interesting subjects, there's 240pg.

you're alright harry, i'm perfectly ok with my own definition of cruelty. thanks!

just one question though.

would you be happy to see little eddie's face torn to shreds or would you be happy watching eddie tear someone else's dogs face to shreds?

you dont have to answer but if you do please answer it straight. if you think dog fighting is acceptable then say it out and dont hide behind other people's hyperbole, i might lose any ounce of respect i had for you but at least you wont be hiding behind subtle hints.

Of course I don't agree with it Barry. I was joking lol!

It's been awhile since there's a thread about 10pages long with people getting grumpy, felt like we could do with one again king

Theres no way I could let Eddie get messed up like some of those dogs, I wouldn't be able for it.

I don't think you would either lol!

We did nearly get a fox yesterday, but it turned out to be a fox poo at the end and not the fox. I didn't realise why Ed was rolling for a few seconds. Easily the worst smell ever, Stillwater collar and dog covered!

Maybe someday we'll get that Foxy lol.
