bed wetting staffy

Post by dirtylilrossie on Fri Aug 26, 2011 6:49 pm

Hi All,

Not sure if this belongs here or not but we have a little problem with our staffy and just wanted to know if anyone could help or has suggestions. Our staffy wets his bed i know it might sound funny but its becoming a problem at this stage with not only having to wash his bedding all the time but the smell is really starting to get to us. He is four years old, is neutered and is house trained, he has his own bed as Izzy sleeps in her crate. Every time we change his bedding he pee's in the bed not a spray but a full on pee and has no problem sleeping in his bed for days after it if we dont notice it. He goes through phases of this aswell he will be good for a month or two but then he starts doing it and keeps doing it. When we discover it he knows he has done wrong as the head goes down straight away and looks guilty even before we say anything to him. We are at our wits end with it and dont know what to do, we were just wondering does anyone have any suggestions on what to do.

Thanks
Dawn sunny

I think you'll have to catch him in the act, easier said than done if he is doing it at night or when you're out etc. He won't learn much unless you catch him doing it.

If he's doing it at night you could prob try and take him out later so he has nothing left in him to piss out. Try not giving him water after 6.00 also.

maybe no harm to ask your vet , he might say bring in a urine sample just to rule out an infection x

has he always done this or just started recently? And does he pee anywhere else indoors? A vet check would be my first option to rule out health problems.

Shadow will do that from time to time, usually if she's not let out last thing at night or we leave water down... I usually let her out just before i go to sleep (the later the better) and take her water up early in the evening... Also using cleaner from the petshop that gets rid of the smell of urine should help (because house hold cleaners wont do it, a dog can still pick up the scent) Hope this is some use to you Wink

He has done it on and off since he was a puppy but it just seems to have got worse lately. I dont think it is an issue with not been let out at night coz they get let out to the loo just before we go to bed, its mostly when we give him clean bedding. I think its behavioural as it seems to have started up again since Izzy has come along even though she sleeps in her crate though she does sleep with him during the day sometimes when we are here. I might try getting that cleaner and see if that helps.

He could be doin it on purpose if its only on his bed i wouldnt say its incontenence hes to young. you might see them as your babies but they are dogs and thats how they mark whats theirs and with the pup on the scene he mite feel like he has to mark wats hÝs even more. And then you come along and was it off on him so it starts all over again Laughing

just a suggestion..... get rid of the bed.... dogs dont like to sleep where they pee. if you crate train him that could help... if he has the run of the house he will keep going back to that bed and peeing because he can sleep elsewhere. when he does go outside lots and lots of praise.
could be acting up due to izzy's arrival if he doing it on and off since he was a pup.

This is very true about dogs not sleeping in their own pee but the staff doesnt mind sleeping in his own pee, like i said he will sleep in it for days if we dont notice it straight away. Yea was thinking he was just marking what is his, they dont have the run of the house just the kitchen and Izzy has her crate and he has his bed and the fact she sleeps in there sometimes when we are there he could just be telling her thats his bed by doing it.

abit of a strange one.... havent ever had that prob, mine are all crated at night time or while im out. it could very well be him trying to mark wot is his... wot if ya frebreeze the bed after izzy has been on it see if that helps.

have you ever spoke to the vet about his prob could be as mentioned above, health problem?

was the problem there before you got him neutered ?

I thought When a dog marks they usually just drop a quick squirt and not the whole bag lol maybe some dogs are different than my lad.

i think he just wants t be out ..
try let the cage open when he is in the house ..
let him go in and out of it when he feels like it ,,

but do let him outside as many times a day to pee..
and no water late at night..

good tip..
works with sick dogs..
if he likes to drink water at night ..give him ice cubes in a bowl ..
let him lap that for a minute or 2..
he wont drink as much..

let im know that the cage is a place to chill,,his place..

when he is pissing in the cage ...
he might think he is doing something wrong...
thats why he gets locked up..

heard a few storys about prisoners doing a dirty protest ..lol..
could be he trying to tell you something

This could be Izzy !!!

And the staffie excepting Izzie into the pack too , Who knows !!!

More likely to be the pup In my opinion ..

Unless the staffie has a few medical problems that havnt come to the surface yet ??..

Hopefully its a faze that will pass as quick as the pissin does .... lol!

Hope ye get it sorted soon anyway,

Ross :)

Dave brought Hector (staff) to the vet yesterday with his eye after his little adventure with the stag in the woods on saturday, he asked her about the bed wetting and she thinks that he is a little put out by the pup coming along and taking over and the fact that she shares his bed sometimes during the day he is putting his scent on his bed to cover her scent. So we are trying to pay him more attention and try not let her take over so hopefully this will help. Thanks again for all the help and comments.
